Town wins fairtrade award

WARRINGTON people have helped the town gain an Outstanding Achievement award for its fairtrade work.
Fairtrade supporters gathered at Bold Street Methodist Church for an event to celebrate the achievement of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010.
Representatives from the town’s business, schools and organisations enjoyed a spread of tempting cakes and savouries made with Fairtrade ingredients. The award was presented to the Mayor.
Master of Ceremonies Rev Stephen Kingsnorth, a founding member of Warrington’s Fairtrade Steering Group, invited members to talk about their campaigns and activities to support Fairtrade.
Children from Fairtrade schools, Cinnamon Brow Primary and St Philip’s Catholic Primary, shared lively presentations of how they are learning about and supporting Fairtrade.
This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight focuses on Fairtrade cotton. Those present heard that when buying cotton goods with the Fairtrade Mark, they can be sure that the growers have received a fair stable price that enables them to provide for their families and begin to work their way out of poverty.
