Town make it three in a row

WARRINGTON Town kept their play off hopes alive as they recorded their third consecutive win with a battling 1-2 victory at Salford last night.
Warrington made the worst possible start to the game after just four minutes with Salford scoring with their first attack, winger Russell Headley seeing his low cross, sliced into his own net by Town defender Louis Corrigan, a finish which gave Town keeper Paul Pritchard no chance.
The game was scrappy, with both sides misplacing passes and chances being at a premium. Town saw captain Mike Tomlinson pushed over in the penalty area soon after, but the referee waved away the protests of the Town players.
Warrington found an equaliser with one of their rare chances, Chris Thompson latching onto a bouncing ball in the box, to lob the stauesque Salford goalkeeper Andy Robertson from the edge of the box. Thompson had another chance to score soon after but saw his header go wide of the target. Deep into first half injury time, Town had a great chance to go ahead, with Gavin Salmon latching onto a throughball, only to see his shot go too close to Robertson, who saved well with an outstretched leg.
Warrington started the second half the better of the two sides, with winger Mike Duffy seeing his blasted volley flying narrowly over the crossbar, before Salmon and Thompson both failed to latch onto young midfielder Kyle Hamid’s throughball. It was Town making most of the chances, with Finley seeing his shot go wide after a strong run at the Salford rearguard. A double substitution in attack gave Salford fresh impetus going forward, with the home side enjoying their best spell of the game with substitute Adam Morning seeing his lob go wide of the target when through on Pritchard’s goal, before finally having a shot on target, just before the hour mark, which was easily dealt with by Pritchard. Town should have gone ahead soon after, but Salmon saw his weak effort easily saved by Robertson.
Pritchard produced a fine tip over to deny substitute striker Tommy Turner.
Warrington found, what turned out to be the winning goal 18 minutes from time, when Thompson reached Tom Hardwick’s pass before the on rushing Robertson to dink the ball over the advancing keeper and into the unguarded net for his sixth goal in the last three games. The home side began to throw caution to the wind, seeking an equalising goal, Turner seeing his powerful effort well blocked by Tomlinson before Salford player manager, Rhodri Giggs, brother of Man Utd’s Ryan, saw his shot well saved by Pritchard. Despite the home side seeking an equaliser, they could not find a way past the Town rearguard, as Warrington secured a valuable three points in their push for the play offs.
Next up for Warrington is the visit of Prescot Cables on Saturday kick off 3pm.
