Campaigners “Make Votes Matter” seek electoral reform

CAMPAIGNERS for electoral reform “Make Votes Matter” were out in Stockton Heath at the weekend.

The Warrington Branch of Make Votes Matter ran a Street Stall in Stockton Heath on Saturday and is a national cross-party campaign, aiming to replace the First Past The Post electoral system currently used for elections to the House of Commons, with a system of Proportional Representation, where a party’s share of the vote more closely reflects the seats they get in an elected body.

Local group organiser Andy Watson said: “Now is an interesting time to be involved in the campaign for equal votes. We have seen a third PM in four recently resign after just three years. Many electoral reform supporters are hopeful that a vote on Labour supporting Proportional Representation at their forthcoming Party Conference will pass.
“More generally, I believe more Warringtonians can not only see that governments elected at Westminster on false-majorities don’t work, but also that recent events here in Warrington with some of the local decisions taken demonstrate that having a Council elected with 60% of the seats on 39% of the vote doesn’t work either.”

The Warrington Make Votes Matter group is planning forthcoming online meetings and local events to further the cause of Proportional Representation. Andy Watson can be contacted on [email protected].

A petition calling on local MPs to back PR can be found on the Make Votes Matter website.
