Village wants to be safe at night

DESPITE its reputation for attracting late night revellers, Stockton Heath is hoping to achieve a quality award for excellence in “safe” evening management.
Stockton Heath Parish Council heard that the borough council was hoping to get a Purple Flag accreditation for the village.
The recognition, awarded by the Association of Town Centre Management, is a new accreditation scheme that recognises excellence in the management of town and city centres at night.
It is awarded to entertainment areas that offer “a better night out” to visitors and aims to raise standards and improve the quality of towns and cities at night.
Dave Watson, the borough’s community safety and licensing manager, told parish councillors: “The award recognises the area as ‘safe’ for people to use. It has been awarded to places such as Liverpool and Birmingham.”
He was working with police, licensing authorities and businesses in the area, to try to achieve the award. A risk assessment was being carried out at licensed premises to ensure they were operating at a high standard.
“We are surveying people to find out what they think about the area and what they thing about using the village at night,” he said.
“We want to ensure that residents and businesses are valued and that all ages use the village. We want to all work together to make the area safe.”
Cllr Marilyn Timmins pointed out there were a lot of public houses, restaurants and licensed premises in the village.
Mr Watson said that although the council could not impose a limit on the numbers of licensed premises in the village, it had adopted a new policy under which people applying for new licences would have to prove they would have a “positive impact” on the village.
Resident John Woods said he thought the village should be more “pedestrian friendly” and that the speed limit should be lowered.
“This would make a huge difference to the feel of the village in the evening,” he said.
Mr Watson said he would pass on the comments to transport planners.
“We want people to feel relaxed when they are walking around the village.”

  1. Are they just surveying the people who are out drinking and eating in the village or are they also popping surveys through local residents doors asking what they think about the area and what they think about using the village at night ? Maybe they should also speak to our local milkman who deliveres milk from 3 am on a saturday morning and who now refuses to drive through the village and takes an alternative route to avoid all the drunken yobs who hang around !!!!

  2. Stockton Heath remains a wonderful place, to live, eat and work. There is always an issue with tourists to any nice area and the local Police do an excellent job in policing that and mainating order.

The parish Council should be congratulating for developing he Village and wider area generally into what it is today.

As a popular area its image can only suffer as a consequnce of its own success. One must question why a new TATTOO PARLOUR to the area needs so many signs. Perhaps thats the issue with tatttoos generally people that have them tend to have too many..

  3. hehehe tourists …. hehe tickled me up that did. May well see that in a local paper.” A tourist from Latchford travelled across the water to the village of Stockton Heath….. *

  4. In 1975, when my business ventures took off, I sold my wonderful small house in Glebe Avenue, Grappenhall and bought an impressive house on Victoria Road, Stockton Heath. Oh what a mistake !!! Even back then the area was sliding downhill, I went from a quiet pint at the Ram’s Head to the chance of a black eye at the Mulberry Tree. Stockton Heath has never had a bunch of class and unfortunately the unwashed rabble recognized this as far back as ’75.. Sorry, but that’s the truth – just a warning to the tourists.
