THE importance of voting in a democracy was underlined at Penketh High School’s Year Seven election.
Seven candidates put their names forward and after the voting, Millie Webster (pictured) was named as the winner and took the vacant place on the school’s Student Council.
Head teacher Jeff Hughes said: “All around the world people make important decisions which affect our lives. We’re very lucky in this country because we have the power to vote for people to make those decisions for us.”
He also spokes of the courage and enthusiasm of the candidates.
“As far as I’m concerned all the people here are winners. They had the courage to say ‘I’ll represent,’ ‘I’ll help out,’ I’ll put my name forward,’ and that to me is everything.”
Millie told a packed drama centre where the count took place: “Everyone has their own opinion and it’s their chance to make their own choice.”
Assistant head Debbie Gibson said: “I’m really proud of all the candidates who put themselves forward as they want to take on responsibility and make a difference for their peers. Special congratulations to Mille who secured the most votes.”
A short film featuring Hollywood stars such as Harrison Ford and Cameron Diaz was shown, which also highlighted the importance of voting.
