Council seeking more foster carers

WARRINGTON Borough Council is hoping 2011 is the year that more people will make a difference to a child’s life by becoming foster carers.
Some 23 councils in the region are working together again for the second part of the “You Can Foster” campaign, which kicked off earlier this month and which aims to show there is no such thing as a “typical foster carer”.
Chris Williams, chairman of the North West Fostering Leads groups, says: “Thanks to all the people across the region who have enquired into fostering for their council so far. We’ve received around 1,100 enquiries to date, which is fantastic, but we’re hoping there are many, many more to come.
“If you’ve been thinking about fostering, make 2011 the year that you get in touch and join the many wonderful foster carers there are who are already making a difference to a child or young person’s life.”
Foster carer Christine Garforth, who will be starring on billboards as part of the campaign, added: “Choosing to foster will be one of the most rewarding things you can do. There are different types of fostering that you can do, depending on your circumstances, from fostering on a long term basis or maybe looking after a child for shorter periods, such as over a weekend. Fostering can be challenging, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.”
One of the main messages of the campaign is to show the diversity of foster carers and to encourage applications from people regardless of ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, marital or employment status.
