A child was taken to hospital after a drug driver was involved in a collision near McDonald’s on Winwick Road, Warrington, yesterday.

Officers came across the collision and volunteered to help move one of the vehicles when they recognised the smell of cannabis.

The male driver provided a positive specimen for cannabis and was arrested for driving whilst over the prescribed limit for cannabis. He had done so with a young child on board, who was taken to hospital to be checked over.

Police say the incident shows the potential dangers of drug driving.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At 4.34pm on Wednesday 13 July officers on patrol on Winwick Road came across a two vehicle collision involving a white Vauxhall Corsa and a black Chevrolet Spark.

“The driver of the Corsa, an 18-year-old man from Golborne was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug driving. He has since been released under investigation.

“There were no reports of any serious injuries, however a child was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”
