POLICE and Crime Commissioner, John Dwyer, visited the Warrington branch of HSBC where a safe space has been launched to provide specialist advice and support to those experiencing domestic abuse.

The Safe Spaces scheme was launched by domestic abuse charity Hestia and its UK SAYS NO MORE campaign. The scheme is supported by funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and aims to increase the availability of specialist support for victims of domestic abuse.

Individuals can now walk into any UK branch of HSBC and access the service which provides a place for victims to phone a helpline, support service or talk to a friend or family member.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer, said: “The Safe Space scheme is a fantastic initiative to have here in Cheshire. I understand that it can be difficult to ask for help in these circumstances so having somewhere other than a police station or charity to go to when you’re in need is really important.

I made protecting vulnerable and at-risk people a priority in my police and crime plan and it is crucial for the police to work alongside organisations and initiatives such as this to make Cheshire even safer.”

Specialist training on Safe Spaces has been provided to over 4,000 employees across all HSBC banks.

Julie Davies, HSBC’s Local Director said: “I am so proud to be part of such an important initiative in our community. HSBC are the largest high street bank to roll this out and our Safe Spaces are already being used and making a difference to people’s lives, complementing HSBC UK’s support for customers experiencing financial abuse.

“This initiative expands on the financial support our teams offer, by giving customers a Safe Space where they can reach out for expert support and guidance from professionals who can help with different types of abuse.”
