More than 50 firefighters tackle scrapyard fire

FIREFIGHTERS from Warrington were among 10 crews tackling a large blaze at a scrapyard in nearby Runcorn this afternoon which caused a large plume of smoke that could be seen for miles around.

Fire engines from Runcorn, Widnes, Penketh (2), Warrington, Stockton Heath, Chester and the aerial appliance from Chester were called blaze involving wooden and plastic pallets at the scrapyard in Percival road, covering an area around 60 square metres.

Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the large amount of smoke but the blaze is now under control and the smoke has cleared.

More than 50 firefighters were at the scene, with several special appliances including an aerial ladder platform, the Scorpion high reach extending turret and a high volume pump.

UPDATE AT 19:30
Fire and rescue resources are being further scaled back, with attendance now reduced to four fire engines, plus an aerial appliance and the ‘Scorpion’ high reach extending turret. Firefighters continue to damp down and check for hot spots. Crews are being sent to relieve the first firefighters on scene and take over the incident.

UPDATE AT 22:15
The number of fire engines at the scene has now been reduced to three. Crews continue to dampen down and monitor for areas of hotspots.

Update at 9am
Firefighters are still in attendance at this incident and are using a hose reel and ground monitors to damp the area down. They are using an onsite digger to turn over materials and expose hot spots of fire. Fire engines from Birchwood and Knutsford are still at the scene.

UPDATE AT 13:30 – 22 APRIL 2022
Crews are still in attendance at this incident. They are working to damp down any pockets of fire and are using a hose reel and a digger to do this.

UPDATE AT 14:20 – 22 APRIL 2022
Once the fire is completely out an investigation to establish the cause of the fire will take place.
