Affordable homes to be built on site of disused historic pub

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the go-ahead to proposals for 16 affordable homes on the site of the disused Sportsman’s Arms pub at Penketh.

Ten semi-detached houses, five terraced houses and one detached house can now be built on the site in Liverpool Road

Thirteen nearby residents had opposed the scheme on the grounds Penketh did not need more houses, that the local infrastructure is already under pressure and because of a lack of parking provisions.

They also argued that the development would mean the loss of a historic pub, a loss of wildlife habitat, including bats, and that the houses would not be genuinely affordable.

But Warrington Borough Council officers recommended the scheme be approved and the borough council’s development management committee agreed.

An earlier scheme, involving six houses but retaining the pub, was approved in 2019 but never proceeded with.

Three years earlier a scheme to demolish the historic pub and build a food store on the site was refused. The same year, an application for the pub to be declared a community asset was approved.

The Sportsman’s Arms has not traded for some years and the site has been fenced off.
