NEARLY 30 volunteers turned out to do a major litter-pick on the towpath of the New Cut Canal at Woolston, Warrington

The blitz by members of the New Cut Heritage and Ecology Group, carried out in conjunction with Warrington Borough Council, resulted in 30 bags of assorted rubbish being cleared from the path and undergrowth.

The annual event helps ensure the popular walk was in pristine condition for the spring.

It is organised to clear some three kilometres of towpath before the summer growth and bird nesting season starts.

The teams of volunteers took the bags of litter to an agreed drop-off point on Manchester Road for council staff to remove.

Volunteers and organisers alike are always amazed at the items found abandoned.

This year, the most “prized” items were a computer and a new microscope still in its box.

Vacuum cleaners, gas cylinders and three bicycles all in need of repair were also found.~

A spokesperson for the New Cut Heritage and Ecology Group said “This path is an increasingly popular heritage asset appreciated by the vast majority of users but sadly there are those few individuals who don’t value it as they should.

“Hopefully the public spirit of these wonderful volunteers will set the example for all to follow”
