THE long-running planning battle over proposals to extend the Lymm Hotel with a leisure centre, conference facilities and additional bedrooms has ended in victory for the hotel.
It was more than 15 years ago that plans were first submitted and, over the years, nearby residents consistently opposed them.
Planners did approve a conference facility and two-storey bedroom block in 1999 but the development never went ahead. Plans to demolish the hotel completely and replace it with 62 apartments were thrown out six years ago.
The new proposals were again opposed by residents, although they did admit they were probably the most acceptable of all submitted over the years.
Members of the borough council’s planning sub-committee agreed and gave the go-ahead, subject to a number of conditions, including one that restricts the hours of the leisure centre to 7.30am-10pm.
The extended hotel will have a swimming pool, gymnasium, conference and business facilities and 29 additional bedrooms. Existing bedrooms will also be renovated.
Objectors stressed throughout their campaign that they wanted to see a successful, viable hotel on the site and were not opposed to development in principle.

Great news! Many nearby residents and neighbours – including myself – have consistently supported plans for a leisure club at the hotel. Over the years I have attended meetings, written letters of support and asked questions (unanswered) of my local representatives about the reasons behind their stance on the project. The problem has always been just a few of the hotels near neighbours who have always been close to the seat of power in the planning process, or had the ear of those who are.
