Young people to run the town

SENIOR councillors and police are stepping down from their jobs for a day to let young people from Warrington “run” the town.
During national Takeover Day on Friday November 12, young people will take over the roles of mayor, executive director for children and young people’s services, deputy leader of the council, executive member for children’s services and the police chief superintendent.
Activities are being organised as part of a national event led by the Children’s Commissioner for England. It gives children and young people the chance to shadow jobs, get involved in decision-making and offer their opinions on key issues.
Coun Sheila Woodyatt, the borough council’s executive member for education and young people, said: “I think this is a fantastic way for young people to experience real jobs in a working environment.
“The people who have offered to step down for the day have a variety of roles and make extremely important decisions every day. I anticipate that everyone involved will learn something from the experience, not just the young people!”
Hundreds of organisations throughout the country have signed up for the event and it is expected that 40,000 children and young people will join in. Organisations taking part include businesses, TV and radio stations, banks, hospitals and charities.
