A RUGBY League fan had to undergo emergency surgery after receiving serious head injuries following the Halifax v Featherstone game at Warrington on Sunday evening.
The 32-year-old man – a Halifax supporter – was attacked on a coach park in Dallam Lane at about 8.15pm.
Police are seeking witnesses of the assault which occurred at a time when the coach park was crowded with fans returning to their coaches.
The victim was returning to where his coach was parked when he was attacked.
He was rushed to hospital in Warrington but later transferred to the specialist neurological unit at Walton Hospital, Liverpool for emergency surgery. He remains in a critical condition
Police stress that the attack was unconnected with the earlier incident when a fire was deliberately started in a toilet under the West Stand, delaying the start of the grand final by more than an hour.
But they would like to see anyone who witnessed the incident on the coach park.
A police spokesman said there was a “strong indication” that the attacker could have been a Featherstone Rovers supporter who got onto a coach to return home after committing the offence.
Anyone can help is asked to call 0845 458 0000 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
