THE Warrington Litter Networks team created a new record this week smashing the 4,000 bag barrier helping to tidy up local communities across the town.

Warrington’s Tuesday litter team set the new local record this year with 4,000 bags collected by volunteers so far in 2021, a fourfold increase on 2020!
The landmark was passed in Westy and Orford on Tuesday, with teams led by Nick Evans and Bill Cooke.

Last Tuesday morning from 10 am till 12 noon, 20 Bags were collected from Bridgewater Avenue, Westy Community Centre, Westy Park and Morris Brook woods, thanks to James, Paul, Jim and Roy with a big thanks to Liz at Westy Community centre who provided the with cakes and tea.

Then on Tuesday afternoon from 1-3pm Nick, James, Paul and Bill collected 28 bags from Donatello’s to Crown Street, near central station. The land off Crown Street was particularly offensive. Joseph also collected seven bags, two shopping trolleys and assorted rubbish from Brickfield Park, making their afternoon total 35 bags. So the total for the day was 65 bags of litter.

This added to the existing total since 1.1.21 to make a grand total of 4,002.5 bags in just over 11 months.

As Nick Evans whatsapped on the day:

“Massive Alert ⚠️ we’ve only gone and done it with today’s grand total of 64 bags the total bags for 2021 is now 4,002.5 🥂🍻🎉🎆 I’m not too sure who got us over the line, It doesn’t matter with today’s incredible total we only gone and smashed the 4K total 👏 Many Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to collecting all those bags of Litter in this year 👍 👏 😀”

The Tuesday litter team WhatsApp group has been active at various sites across Warrington for two 2 hour sessions every Tuesday, weekly throughout 2021.
Team members also litter pick on other days of the week, and this is added to the total on their WhatsApp group. In addition, since September they have been supported by the Sunday litter team volunteer litter picks (once a month) which have helped them achieve this fantastic total.

Volunteer Tony Dixons said: “We think this is a local Warrington record. We would like to thank all the litter picking volunteers who have supported our groups and helped to make our hometown of Warrington a little bit tidier.

He added: “Of course, there is still a long way to go. As Winston Churchill once said, ‘This is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning’”.

If anyone would like to get involved they are welcome to join one of the 22 local Warrington litterpicking groups on https://litternetworks.org/area/warrington

*The Litter Networks became Warrington World’s first legacy project recipient earlier this year – and it is fantastic to see the £500 donation being put to good use.
