Be safe online warning

A WARNING to Warrington people to be aware of fake websites sites and products when shopping online has been issued by Trading Standards officers.
They are promoting National Consumer Week (September 20 to 24) with the message “be safe online – beware of fake sites and fake products.”
Warrington officers say internet shopping is more popular than ever and want customers to know their rights and how to protect themselves.
Coun Mike Biggin, (pictured right) executive board member for climate change and public protection, said: “Buying on the Internet is a relatively safe way of shopping and following some simple tips should provide additional protection for you. Remember though, if you do encounter problems when purchasing on the internet there is a raft of consumer legislation to protect you.”
Officers say website addresses should start with “https://” instead of “http://”, as the “s” denotes a secure connection. Also, double click on the small gold lock icon displayed at the bottom of the screen – this should confirm a valid digital certificate.
They say make sure there is a landline UK number and a UK based address, and to use a credit card as protection is then offered under the Consumer Credit Act.
Officers suggest using the same credit card for all on-line purchases and keeping the credit limit low. If people are buying from e-bay, they suggest setting up a PayPal account for extra protection.

  1. Eh ? Argos, Asda, Tesco websites etc all start with http:// and not https:// Is it only at the payment screen that we should look for out https ??? I rarely buy online but I’m confused now 🙁 Good to warn people of the dangers on dodgy websites and their rights though as more and more people are buying online these days.
