Objectors fail in bid to stop “unsightly” fire safety development

A RETROSPECTIVE application for tanks and a fire safety sprinkler system for use in the event of a fire at a warehouse complex on Warrington’s Omega South development has been given the go-ahead.

Warrington Borough Council’s development management committee approved the scheme despite objections from nearby residents.

Councillors heard the development was considered acceptable as emergency plant for the SCA Investments warehouse complex which had already been approved.
Objectors claimed the tanks were unsightly when viewed from local footpaths and amenity areas and from the Kingswood Estate, particularly for people living in Tourney Green.
They argued that the tanks should have been sited within the warehouse complex or in a location less visible to nearby residents.
But planning officers maintained the fire safety sprinkler tanks and pumphouse were acceptable in terms of residential amenity and visual amenity effects. The system would only be used in the event of a fire and their visual impact would be reduced by landscaping.
At the time the warehouses were given approval, the end-user was not known. But an end-user had now been secured and the plant was needed to meet their fire safety requirements.
