Probe into school blaze

A FIRE which caused extensive damage at a Warrington school early today is under investigation.
Fire experts says there is no obvious cause for the blaze which affected three classrooms at Oakwood Primary School, in Oakwood Avenue, off Manchester Road.
Nearby residents alerted the fire service after an internal firm alarm went off at the school shortly after 2am.
Four fire appliances were sent to the scene.
The blaze started in a timber storage building adjacent to the main school building and spread to the structure of the main building.
Fire crews managed to contain the fire at the roof line – but a firefighter present at the scene said if they had arrived 10 or 15 minutes later it was likely to have spread into the roof and would have been much more serious.
There was moderate fire damage to the building and serious smoke damage affecting three classrooms – all of which are reception classrooms to be used by new pupils arriving when the school re-opens after the summer holiday.
But a spokesperson for the school said it would open on time and special arrangements would be made for the new pupils.
