Milestone for council recycling

ECO-FRIENDLY residents have helped Warrington Borough Council reach two landmark recycling and composting goals.
Since the blue bin scheme started nearly two years ago, the authority has recycled more than 30,000 tonnes of newspapers, cans, card, plastic bottles and glass. That’s the weight of more than 4,000 elephants!
The green bin that collects garden waste has collected even more since it began back in spring 2006. In mid-August the amount of garden waste collected hit an amazing 50,000 tonnes – more than the Titanic weighed!
Coun Alan Litton, the council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “This is an amazing achievement and a great credit to the green-minded residents of Warrington. A big thank you and well done to everyone who contributed.”
These figures have helped increase the recycling and composting rate from four per cent in 1998 to well over 40 per cent in the last year and it is still increasing.
The council is now looking into even more ways to help people recycle and compost more of their household waste to continue to improve year on year and reach the target of 55% composting and recycling by 2020. For more information visit: www.recycleforwarrington.co.uk
