A NEW bid is to be made to build a five-storey office block described earlier this year as “massive and visually intrusive” in Warrington town centre.
Commercial property developers Chesro Ltd have submitted outline proposals for the scheme in Stanley Street, adjoining the existing telephone exchange building.
Councillors have already visit the site once after hearing of objections from neighbouring business.
Objectors say the new building would dwarf an adjoining attractive Grade 2 listed Georgian terrace.
But planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved and point out the new building would help mask the telephone exchange, which they describe as an unattractive, mid-20th century building.
Although detailed proposals are due to be supplied later, illustrative plans indicate a flat roofed building of contemporary design, mainly glazed on its two main frontages.
The rear would be hidden from view by the telephone exchange.
At present the site is used as a car park and it believed to have previously been a domestic garden.
Planners say the site appears to be currently used as a car park, although this use is unauthorised. It was previously owned by the borough council and was then landscaped open space.
Occupiers of business premises in Stanley Street believe the scheme may result in damage to existing mature trees.

why are they going to build there i wonder. there is the old boots building lying empty and MFI which has it’s own car parking facility and is handy for the train station. has nobody from the council pointed these places out?
