Science lectures online

DARESBURY Laboratory launches its new season of “Talking Science” lectures on Friday, September 24 – and for the first time will be webcast live and published on line.
The first lecture will deal with the engineering involved in building some of the most complicated machines ever built – such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and Daresbury Laboratory’s own ALICE and EMMA particle accelerators.
Booking for the free lecture starts on September l – and demand is usually high.
Other lectures in the coming months will explore the science behind how scientists are trying to unravel the mysteries of the universe; how we interpret the visual world around us; how space weather affects our day-to-day lives; how synthetic biology could mean cheaper and faster drugs and cleaner fuels; what climate change means to the polar regions; and how astronomers can pinpoint the exact moment that the Romans invaded Britain from closely examining a painting.
Tony Buckley, head of Science in Society at Daresbury said: “Everything around us has been touched by science but we don’t always get the chance to understand how and why this is.
“The Daresbury Laboratory ‘Talking Science’ lecture programme gives everyone a chance to hear from the experts, get to grips with the latest developments in science and technology and have their questions answered. You don’t need to be a scientist to attend, everyone is invited.”
For the first time, each lecture will now be webcast live and archived on the Science and Technoligy Facilities Council website.
Mr Buckley added: “I’m really pleased we’re doing this. It’s tremendous that there’s such a great interest in science locally that the Talking Science lectures are always fully booked, but it has meant that many who wanted to come were disappointed. They’ll now be accessible to everyone, wherever they are.”
The full programme of lectures can be found online at www.stfc.ac.uk/dlwebcasts
Tickets must be booked in advance on 01925 603040 or by emailing [email protected]
