Historic town centre building set to become apartments

PROPOSALS have been put to Warrington planners convert a historic town centre building – last used as a live music venue – into 12 apartments.

The part three, part two-storey building is in Legh Street and was last used as Live Bar – a bar and live music venue which closed in late 2019 after operating for only about six months.
Planning officers, who are recommending the new scheme be approved, say they understand the music venue proved unviable.

But since it fell into disused, the building’s condition has deteriorated.
The plan is for 12 apartments – six one-bedroom and six two-bedroom.
Fourteen objections have been received – including some on the grounds that the change of use will result in the loss of a valued, live music venue.
But 24 letters of support have been received, mainly on the grounds that the town centre needs more people moving in to “bring it back to life.”
The building dates from 1894 and, although it has been altered, remains a good example of buildings of that period. It is not Listed – but is regarded as a non-designated heritage asset.
Proposals include removal of an old, external fire escape, reinstatement of architectural detailing, retention and repair of a recessed entrance door on Legh street and reinstatement of windows.
The plan comes before the borough council’s development management committee on Thursday.
