Affordable homes plan for green land

BOROUGH Council housing chiefs are seeking planning consent for 10 “affordable” semi-detached bungalows for the elderly on a greenfield site at Warrington.
The rented bungalows at Sealand Close, Fearnhead, would be developed by the Arena Housing Association but retained in council ownership and let by the authority.
While normally the development would be considered against council policy because of the present oversupply of housing land in the borough and because of the loss of green space, the provision of genuine affordable homes outweighs these objections, according to planners.
A report to be considered by the borough’s planning sub-committee states: “The overall benefits in securing the elderly persons’ affordable housing outweigh the presumption against the loss of an area of urban green space, particularly given that there is a surplus of recreation land in the locality.”
