A special race meeting is taking place on Friday in memory of a Warrington businessman who tragically died from a brain tumour aged just 51.
Ron Hickman was so passionate about horse racing he even named his business after a famous race horse – Arkle Properties!
The event takes place this Friday (July 30) when the race meeting at Bangor on Dee will host the Ron Hickman memorial handicap hurdle.
The race will be the last on the card at 6pm. Ron sadly passed away in March after battling a brain tumour.
Many friends and relatives are expected to attend to pay respects to Ron who was a very keen racegoer.
Ron lived in Warrington for the vast majority of his life. Former employers include Sema and the Nationwide recruitment organisation Spring, where Ron acted as operations director for a number of years. More recently he had set up business interests in Warrington including successful property development and management companies Arkle properties and Arkle lettings. Ron was a very keen and competitive sportsman. In his younger days he played football, rugby and cricket, and in sporting circles within the town would probably be best remembered for his involvement with the football teams at the Saracens Head and Monks Sports in the late 80s.
Ron had a real passion for horse racing and was a regular at tracks up and down the country and indeed had appeared on Tv as a pundit and wrote a regular article in the Racing Post covering the 10 to follow competition.
Former business partner Rich Sutton said: “It is a very fitting way for people to come and pay their respects. Ron enjoyed the races and the champagne tent too!!
“Arkle properties the company we set up together was named after the famous racehorse. We had some great times at the races and he would be proud to have a race named in his honour.”
His wife Jill who has organised the memorial race in his honour would like to invite any former friends and work colleagues to join her at Bangor. Anyone wishing to do so can call Cliff Regan on 07795 260493 or Rich Sutton on 07787795130 for more details.
