MOTORISTS faced lengthy delays across Warrington following a serious collision on the M6 involving three HGVS and the spillage of oil and wine.
Two people were taken to hospital after the collision which resulted in the motorway being closed in both directions between Junction 19 and Junction 20, near Lymm, just after 1pm.
North West Ambulance Service confirmed two patients have been taken to hospital after the crash. One suffered only minor injuries in the collision. The second had to be cut free and was taken to hospital.
While the Northbound carriageway was reopened the M6 Southbound remained closed well into the evening causing severe delays, with stationary traffic due to spillage of oil and wine and accident investigation work between J20 M56 (Lymm Interchange) and J19 A556 (Knutsford).
There was Congestion to J21 (Woolston) as well as delays through Warrington.
Motorists were stranded in their vehicles for more than six hours with police providing bottles of water.
Six fire engines are in attendance and firefighters were involved in removing the contents of a trailer unit while absorbent pads were placed on the carriageway.
Emergency vehicles are still responding to the incident on the M6 between J20 & J19. if you are held in the queue please remain with your vehicle. Being on the opposite c/way or h/s is not safe for you & delays crucial equipment getting to the scene. pic.twitter.com/WMbae8uS9e
