OBJECTORS have failed to block proposals to demolish the Springbrook pub at Grappenhall to make way for a new care home.

Warrington borough council’s development management committee has given the go-ahead for a state-of-the-art 70-bed care facility on the site of the Springbrook pub.
Fourteen nearby residents objected to the scheme, claiming pub companies were using the Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent loss of income as a reason to justify closing pubs.

But the committee was told the Springbrook – which stands on the site of an earlier pub, the Dog and Dart, was considered to be unviable.
Objectors claimed the loss of the pub would mean a valuable community facility would also be lost.
They also pointed out that the former Dog and Dart pub, which had been rebu ilt further down the road, had also gbeen closed to make way for accommodation for the elderly.
They believed the Springbrook should be retained for the benefit of the local community.
Planning officers recommended the scheme be approved as the new care facility would help meet the needs of the elderly in the area.
The scale, appearance and layout of the proposed building was considered acceptable .
According to developers, the care facility will provide 80-100 local jobs and meet a need for quality care for people who no longer felt able to live independently at home.
