A WARRINGTON student is one of only a handful in the country to be awarded a prestigious advanced gliding scholarship from the Royal Navy.
James Imrie, 18, of Priestley College, got the invitation to take part after completing a rigorous selection process.
He originally completed the standard gliding scholarship at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall. His tutors were impressed and he was subsequently invited back to complete the advanced programme this summer at HMS Collingwood near Portsmouth from July 16 to 18.
James is currently completing A-Levels in Physics, Electronics and Design Technology. He plans to move onto the University of Central Lancashire to read Motor Sport Engineering.
He said: “I’m really pleased to be selected for the advanced scholarship. I can’t wait to get back in the air and this summer is really looking like a fun one.
“I am very much looking at pursuing a career in aviation and I hope to reapply for a position with the Royal Navy whilst I’m taking my degree.”
