MUMS from Bosom Buddies Breastfeeding support group in Warrington are giving out free gifts and advice to mark National Breastfeeding Awareness week.
They are on duty at Mothercare, Alban Retail Park, Winwick Road.
The Bosom Buddies group is a joint project between Warrington Community Services Unit and Warrington and Halton NHS Foundation Trust.
Infant feeding co-ordinators Ann Marie Hatton and Avril Smith, who represent both organisations, have been visiting local primary schools and helping pupils to understand how babies are fed by their mothers.
Children were shown model examples of animals feeding their young such as a cat feeding a kitten. They were then be introduced to the concept of how women also can feed their babies.
Avril said: “We are keen to continue to advise people of all ages about the benefits of breastfeeding and we also aim to educate the young.
“Explaining to pupils that breastfeeding is a natural way that a mother can feed her baby, will hopefully not only introduce breastfeeding as a concept but will also encourage the younger generation to think about breastfeeding their own children later on in life.”
She said breastfeeding provides babies with lots of nutrients and protects them from infections and diseases such as ear infections, obesity and childhood diabetes. Breastfeeding can also reduce a woman’s chances of getting breast or ovarian cancer or osteoporosis later in life.
