Armed raid on village post office

POLICE are appealing for information after an armed robbery at a rural post office in which the postmaster was struck with an axe.
Even after being struck on the head, the postmaster tackled the masked raider again and he eventually fled with a quantity of cash.
The raid was at about 10.45am today at the village post office in Senna Lane, Comberbach.
The raider burst in, jumped over the counter and told the postmaster: “Don’t be stupid.”
When he saw the man was armed with an axe, the postmaster tried to grab it and there was a struggle between the two men with both falling to the floor. The offender managed to get up first and struck the postmaster on the head.
The offender then attacked the glass counter with the axe, shattering the glass before grabbing a quantity of cashapproached the glass front of the post office counter and began to hit the glass with the axe, causing it to smash. He jumped over behind the post office counter, and grabbed a quantity of cash before being challenged a second time by the postmaster, who he pushed away.
He then ran out of the Post Office, bumping into a woman member of the public as he went and got into his car, a black BMW M3 which was parked opposite the telephone exchange on Senna Lane on the same side as the Post Office.
As a result of the incident the postmaster sustained cuts to his head which required hospital treatment.
The offender is described as black, in his late 20s to early 30s, about six ft three inches tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a black hooded top and had his face covered with an ape mask.
Det Insp Peter Lawless said “This is an extremely serious crime, during the commission of which the Postmaster has sustained serious injury. The offender was determined to steal money and wasn’t concerned who he hurt in the process. We need to catch him as soon as possible, therefore, I am appealing for help from anyone who witnessed the incident, saw the car driving away and has any information, however insignificant they may feel it is to contact us “.
