On call firefighters wanted

PEOPLE to train as “on-call” firefighters in Warrington are being sought by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The service is currently recruiting retained firefighters at Birchwood Fire Station who must live or work within five minutes of the fire station, be able to respond quickly to emergency incidents, and have a good level of personal fitness.
Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock said: “You will be trained to the exact same standard as your full time colleagues and will be expected to deal with a range of incidents including fires, flooding, road traffic collisions and chemical incidents to name but a few.
“In addition, a part of your role will be to attend community events and initiatives and to act as a local ambassador for the service.”
They will mainly provide cover during the evenings, with full time colleagues continuing to work out of the station on a 12-hour shift during the day. Retained firefighters are well paid for both being on call and for each occasion they are called out.
Anyone interested can attend one of the awareness sessions being held at the station at 6pm and 7.30pm on Monday June 21, Thursday June 24 and Monday June 28. A full day event will also take place on Saturday June 26 with workshops at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
Sessions are open to everyone interested in joining the service and will include briefings about the recruitment process and the chance to have a go at the practical tests that form part of the selection.

Absolutely not. As stated above Retained or ‘on call’ firefighters are trained to the exact same standard as their wholetime colleagues and are well paid for the work they do.

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the country’s leading fire and rescue services and make a real difference in your community. We are very proud of our retained firefighters who provide almost 60% of our current fire and rescue cover.

Terry, glad to here that you are interested. What I would say to you is pop along to one of the ‘Awareness Day’ sessions where you can see exactly what the role involves. There will also be the opportunity to take part in some of the fitness challenges that form part of the recruitment. This will enable you to see just what is required.
