Thieves net fishing gear worth thousands

FISHING equipment worth several thousand pounds has been stolen from a shed at Warrington – and police have warned residents to be on their guard against further similar thefts.
They say insecure garden sheds and outbuildings are an “open invitation” to criminals.
The fishing equipment was stolen from a shed at a house in Walter Street, Warrington during the night.
Officers are following several lines of enquiry but anyone with any information about the theft is urged to get in touch.
PC Ian Morris, of Warrington Central Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have any information which could help us with our enquiries.
“We are also interested in hearing from anyone who may have been offered any fishing equipment at discounted prices.
“We would encourage people to keep sheds locked and secure whatever time of the day or night. Otherwise it is in effect an open invitation for thieves.”
Residents are being urged to reassess the security of any sheds or outbuildings and to take steps to reduce their chances of falling foul of thieves.
Good quality padlocks or other security devices are recommended and large items such as ladders or bikes should be secured to the inside of buildings or anchored to the floor.
Motion sensitive security lights, gravel paths and the planting of prickly bushes are also recommended as deterrents.
Residents are also encouraged to use property marking systems which show that the items belong to them -making it easier for police to return solten if any of the items are ever stolen and recovered it will be easier for them to be returned to their rightful owner.
Anyone who can help is asked to call police on 0845 458 0000 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
