COLLEGE students from Warrington put their best foot forward to hike 26 miles for charity – and managed to raise £2,000.
The 23 joinery students from Warrington Collegiate walked from the college to Liverpool city centre, crossed the Mersey by the underground and then trekked on through the Wirral to Claire House Children’s Hospice.
Once there they presented staff with a bench made especially for the hospice.
All money raised by students will go directly to the hospice, which is the Collegiate’s chosen charity and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The hospice provides 24-hour respite, palliative, and terminal care for children aged 0-23 years with life threatening or life limiting conditions.
Joinery tutor Bernie Casey, who organised the event, said: “The walk was a fantastic experience for the lads. All the students really enjoyed the challenge and the commitment they showed was admirable.
“Claire House gave us a great welcome when we arrived at the hospice and we presented them with the wooden bench we had made.”
Student Daniel Gifford adds: “It was really hard and we were all exhausted after it, but I will remember this for the rest of my life.”
Business and catering students also played their part by organising a charity dinner in aid of the hospice.
They organised an evening of glitz and glamour including a gourmet three-course meal prepared by the Collegiate’s catering students, live musical entertainment and an auction.

The support from the students and staff at Warrington Collegiate for Claire House Childrens Hospice is nothing short of astounding. They are a credit to Warington. Im really proud of the way they have shown us what our enterprising young adults actually do for others. Well done Warrington Collegiate each and every one of you!
