Local Green Party call for free bus travel to tackle air pollution

WARRINGTON and Halton Green Party believe that a tough approach is needed to cut air pollution levels with leader Lyndsay McAteer calling for free bus travel.

A Centre for Studies report last year ranked Warrington the third-worst for deaths from deadly toxins as part of air pollution. Only a drastic reduction in traffic will enable significant improvement.

Local Green Party leader Leader,Lyndsay McAteer said: “Monitoring air pollution is an important first step in dealing with toxic air, however the impact on our health is so severe that we need to drastically cut the level of traffic on our roads. If people were able to travel by bus at no cost this would surely be a huge incentive to discourage car dependence.”
Warrington and Halton Green Party welcome the decision in Manchester to bring the buses back into public ownership. This is an important first step, but more radical action is needed. Lyndsay added,
“Make the buses free. Let’s come up with a robust financial plan to ensure we can cover the costs. As a result, we will see massive improvements in public health; an attractive town with a sustainable footprint; and improved connectivity. This is an idea whose time has come. Let us make health our number one priority.”
