Police clampdown on drink crime

ALCOHOL related crime and disorder will not be tolerated in Warrington during the World Cup.
That is the message from police who are cracking down on violence and disorder during the month-long tournament.
Extra officers will be on duty across the town at key times throughout the event. They will be on hand to deal with any incidents of crime and disorder, which might occur, and to offer reassurance to residents and to members of the public who might be visiting a pub or bar in Warrington to watch a match on the big screen.
Chief Inspector Bev Raistrick, (right) who is overseeing the policing operation in the town throughout the tournament, said: “We want to send out a strong message to potential troublemakers in the town – bad behaviour is not acceptable and we will take positive action against anyone intent on breaking the law or causing a nuisance.
“We know that the majority of people will enjoy the tournament sensibly and we are not out to spoil their fun. Unfortunately, there will always be a minority of people who use big events like this as an excuse to drink to excess and cause problems for everyone else by becoming rowdy, abusive and potentially violent.
“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and potential troublemakers should be on their guard. This is a sociable event and many people will want to watch the matches on the big screen at their local pub or in a bar where there is a lot of atmosphere.
“We want people to stay safe and be sensible while they are out and about. We want to ensure that the enjoyment of the vast numbers of genuine football fans is not spoiled by the bad behaviour of a few.”
Groups causing problems will be dispersed and officers will issue revellers with Section 27 “Direction to Leave” notices where appropriate.

  1. Ye Gods! Extra police on duty during World Cup matches! Yesterday we were told the NHS as setting up an emergency centre in Bridge Street during matches. Before that we were warned to expect an outbreak of wife-beating (or husband beating) during the World Cup. How much is all this going to cost? It’s beginning to look as if we could pay off the national debt if we pulled out of the tournament!
