Emergency centre for World Cup yobs

AN emergency “hub” is being set up in Warrington town centre to tackle problems caused by binge drinking during the World Cup tournament.
During the last World Cup, 999 calls rose nationally by 50 to 75 per cent during and after the England games, largely due to an increase in drinking. The figure was lower in Warrington, but the hub service is designed to provide assistance to fans and keep emergency calls to a minimum.
Organisations throughout the town are working together to keep residents safe on England match days. The hub, on Lower Bridge Street will offer first aid treatments, police help and alcohol advice.
The service has been set up by the Warrington Partnership and staff will be on hand from the Police, Red Cross, Adult Alcohol Services and Young People’s Outreach Service. The hub will be in operation half an hour before the scheduled kick off of each England match and for several hours afterwards.
Lolita Alfred, health improvement project co-ordinator for NHS Warrington said: “Many England fans may have several drinks whilst celebrating and enjoying the games but are advised to remain aware of the how much they have drunk. It’s important to know when you’ve reached a safe drinking limit.”
She said the NHS advises that men should not exceed three to four units per day on a regular basis (there are up to three units in a pint of beer) and women two to three units per day (there can be up to three units in a large glass of wine).
“The World Cup brings people together to celebrate in the success or commiserate the fate of their chosen team. Whatever team you support, make sure you’re safe and smart whilst the World Cup is on,” she said.
Other tips for staying safe during the celebrations include offering friends and family help if needed, allowing plenty of time to travel to watch World Cup matches and having arrangements in place for getting home safely.
