WARRINGTON couple Mavis and Gilbert Wright will sadly be celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary in lockdown today, shielding from family and friends.
But granddaughter Nicola arranged for the diamond couple to have a “shout out” on warrington-worldwide while arranging for family and friends to send in congratulations messages online.
The couple, Mavis Wall and Gilbert Wright, got married at St Margaret’s church on 25th March 1961.
They met through Mavis being friends and working with Gil’s sister who came in work one day at Timothy Whites shop in Horsemarket Street with a new bag. Mavis asked “where’s that bag from?” Gil had just come home from Malaysia off national service and gave his sister the gift. She asked if she would like to meet him and the rest is history !!
Mavis booked a surprise holiday back to all the places in Singapore/Malaysia where he had been, as a gift for an earlier wedding anniversary and Gil’s retirement.
Gil served in the army and then drove an HGV for British Steel all over the country. He then worked as a stonemason laying all the walls and flags around Warrington. He laid all Walton drag and Manchester Road! Then he went driving for a waste management company that became Biffa before retiring.
Mavis worked at Timothy Whites on Horsemarket Street. She also worked at Lever Brothers on Persil packing when the children were young. She then worked at Thames Board, then as a cook at Firgrove Hotel and then Cinnamon Brow school before retiring.
They had 3 children David, Geoff and Julie and now have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Nicola said: “It’s been a tough 12 months with lockdown and them both shielding away from family as with many families. But we wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate something happy and positive and let them know how loved and thought off they are from all of their family and friends.”
