Village gets ready to walk

ARRANGEMENTS are well advanced for the annual Grappenhall Walking Day on Saturday, June 26.
The walk – the origins of which go back almost 180 years – will be followed by St Wilfrid’s Primary School Summer Fair.
Grappenhall Walking Day was originally a spin off from Warrington Walking Day, which started around 1832
Historically, the walkers wore their Sunday Best and onlookers gave money to the passing children. In theory the money was meant for the church but nowadays, most children spend it at the summer fair on the school field afterwards!
The Grappenhall Walk involves St Wilfrid’s Church and Grappenhall Independent Methodist Church and many local community groups such as scouts, guides and the school.
It starts with a service at St Wilfrid’s Church at 1.30pm.
The summer fair at the school will have stalls, coconut shy, tombola, street dancing displays, refreshments, etc and there will be a visit by Warrington Wolves’ mascot Wolfie.
It will raise money towards the £3,500 cost of outdoor play equipment at the school.
