MP calls for a Budget that puts ‘people before politics’

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols is urging the Chancellor to put ‘people before politics’ in tomorrow’s Budget.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) Chancellor Rishi Sunak will deliver the set-piece economic event of the year, The Budget and in anticipation of this, yesterday Labour’s Shadow Chancellor Annelise Dodds outlined the party’s vision for rebuilding the foundations of our economy focus on protecting jobs, supporting our high streets to thrive and protecting family finances.
Ms Nichols is also a member of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee.
She said: “The metric by which I will judge this week’s Budget is whether it puts people before politics. People in Warrington have been hit hard by this pandemic and need to hear from the Chancellor that he will support their jobs, their family finances and our local high streets.
“From what they’ve briefed out so far it seems as though the Government is preparing to use the Budget to play politics with the recovery by increasing tax so they can cut it just before the next General Election.
“This is deeply irresponsible and economically illiterate, risking our recovery before it has even begun. Labour’s approach on this is supported by the CBI, OECD and IMF, whereas the Tories are dismissing experts for a political stunt.
“This Government wasted £22bn on a Test and Trace system that didn’t work for months and spent £2bn in outsourced contracts that didn’t deliver at all. It is time they put people first.”
