WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has hailed a ‘landmark ruling’ in the Supreme Court today, on workers’ rights for Uber drivers.

The landmark ruling found that Uber must classify their drivers as workers rather than self-employed.
This change of status would entitle Uber drivers across the country to being paid the minimum wage and having holiday pay.
The case was brought by former Uber drivers James Farrar and Yaseen Aslam and supported by the GMB trade union.
As a former GMB staffer and a proud trade unionist, Ms Nichols has welcomed the decision, saying: “I hope that this will be a landmark ruling in the deregulation of employment protections through the so-called ‘gig economy’
“I want to pay tribute to the tireless campaigning work of GMB Union and all of those involved in fighting for this.”
Mick Rix, GMB National Officer, added:”This has been a gruelling four-year legal battle for our members – but it’s ended in a historic win.
“The Supreme Court has upheld the decision of three previous courts, backing up what GMB has said all along; Uber drivers are workers and entitled to breaks, holiday pay and minimum wage.
“Uber must now stop wasting time and money pursuing lost legal causes and do what’s right by the drivers who prop up its empire.”

  1. Whilst against exploration of workers rights I do wonder why employed people and the tax office make judgements on the self employed. They are an integral part of the economy and give give freedom to people to earn a bob or two to make ends meet, in addition the entrepreneur is also stifled, not many employed people get to become millionaires.
