Join the fight against car crime

DRIVERS across Warrington are being urged to join in the fight against car crime.
Motorists are being encouraged to take a few simple steps to make their vehicle less attractive to would-be thieves.
The advice comes during Car Crime Awareness Week – a national initiative, which has been established as an annual reminder for motorists to be vigilant in order to reduce their chances of becoming a victim of car crime.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan said: “We cannot stress how important it is for drivers to be security conscious at all times. We are still seeing a number of incidents where drivers are simply not locking their vehicle while it is unattended – this is simply an open invitation for an opportunistic thief.
“At this time of year – as the lighter nights and warmer weather creep in – we renew our appeal to residents to keep their homes safe and secure to avoid falling foul of a sneak-in thief. And it is no different to drivers and their cars – the same rules apply.
“You should always keep your vehicle locked and secure at all times – never leave it unlocked and unattended even for a few seconds. This applies to wherever it is parked – on the driveway at home, at work or when you are out and about. Remember to remove any valuable items from inside the vehicle – this includes laptops, sat navs, mobile phones and the fascia of car stereos.
“Your car keys are also important so make sure you look after them and know where they are at all times. Thieves have been known to break into houses to steal car keys that are on show – and then take the car that is parked on the driveway – so the advice is to keep any keys hidden away and out of the sight of prying eyes.”

  1. Having had a car broken into on my drive and subsequently having the CCTV to trap and convict the scum that did it; the fact he only got a 6 month suspended sentence after admitting theft and damage to vehicles totalling in excess of £30,000 points the finger at soft sentences rather than actually catching the scum. Maybe a 5 year sentence for anyone caught stealing from any house or car may be a good starting point
