New homes for old for pensioners

SIX pensioners who lost their homes at Warrington when a sheltered accommodation unit was closed, have been found new homes.
Warrington Housing Association has come to the aid of the six who lost their homes at Penketh Court, in Farnworth Road, Penketh when a decision was taken to close the facility.
Penketh Court was one of a number of retirement properties in Warrington which failed to meet government criteria for refurbishment and had to close.
Built in 1974, it originally provided 32 flats.
After the closure decision, a number of residents were still in need of re-housing in retirement accommodation.
After hearing about the residents’ plight, Jackie Denning, (pictured) housing options co-ordinator for Warrington Home Information and Improvement Agency and Val Walsh, property services officer for Warrington Housing Association (WHA) set about trying to secure accommodation for them.
Working in partnership with Golden Gates Housing, WHA has successfully re-housed five tenants – three at Lyon Court in Latchford and two at Raven Court in Lymm.
Another is to move to Lyon Court this month.
Jackie Denning said: “When I heard about the closure of Penketh Court I wanted to help its residents find alternative homes. Moving home can be stressful so I was keen to make sure the assistance we offered made the process simple and straightforward for them.
“With availability at two of our retirement schemes in the area, we were able to re-house five tenants immediately, with another due to move shortly. The five residents we have re-housed are delighted with their new homes and have settled in well.”
Brian Yule, who has been re-housed at Raven Court, said: “Penketh Court was my home for eight years so its closure meant a big change for me, which was very daunting.
“I can’t thank Warrington Housing Association enough for all their help. From arranging visits, viewing their retirement schemes to introducing me to potential new neighbours, their assistance has been invaluable.
“I am now delighted to be in my new home at Raven Court and have settled in comfortably.”
WHA chief executive Alan Kemp said: “It has been a pleasure to assist Golden Gates Housing re-house a number of its tenants. The move of the first five residents went smoothly and is now complete and I am confident that we can help secure further accommodation for other Penketh Court residents in the coming months.”
Jackie Denning will advise on housing options for any older person in Warrington and give assistance to individuals who want to move to more suitable accommodation or ensure their current home meets their needs.
