PEOPLE who have never tried composting are being invited to “give it a grow” during Compost Awareness Week which starts on Sunday May 2.
Organisers of the week say people are often unaware that vegetable peelings or garden waste when sent to landfill release powerful greenhouse gases just like other rubbish.
About a third of people already compost garden and kitchen waste at home, but may be unaware that shredded paper or vacuum cleaner contents can also go into a compost bin.
Andy Cutts, Warrington Borough Council’s waste minimisation and recycling manager, said: “We’d like to thank all residents who have taken part in the kerbside green bin scheme over the last four years. We have collected well over 44,000 tonnes of garden waste to date, which is a great achievement.”
He asks people to use green bins for all garden waste including items like grass cuttings, flowers, plants and small branches and twigs. This garden waste is sent for composting and then turned into soil improver for agricultural land.
