A community has rallied after “mindless” vandals destroyed the Christmas lights at Padgate Community Garden which is cared for by a dedicated team of volunteers.
The vandals maliciously destroyed three sets of Christmas lights in the garden.
But the volunteers responded by setting up a crowdfunding page to help bring back Christmas cheer for the local community.
The fundraising page has been set up by community garden volunteer Wendy Gardener who said: “Over the last few days three sets of the Christmas lights in Padgate Community Garden have been maliciously damaged.
“As we have to fundraise for everything we do on the garden we can’t afford to buy new lights. Several people have asked us how they can help replace them, so we have set up this just giving page if anyone would like to donate.”
Meanwhile, local Co-op store manager and community fundraiser Dave Appleton posted on twitter: “I was saddened to hear mindless idiots have destroyed the Christmas lights at Padgate Community Garden. John & the volunteers work throughout the year to provide a place for our community too meet & enjoy. If you can help replace the lights please visit https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/wendy-gardener
Within a matter hours more than £125 was raised to help replace the lights.
