Jolly Falstaff pub to be demolished as future development site

THE Jolly Falstaff pub in Warrington will be demolished after councillors voted to flatten it.

A decision on the plans by developers had been delayed so a bat survey could be carried out, Warrington Borough Council’s Development Management Committee was told on Thursday night. This had been completed in August.

The building, in Poulton-with-Fearnhead, has been closed since March 2022 and had been the site of anti-social behaviour.
Developers sought permission from the land owners, Warrington Borough Council, to demolish it and landscape it with Tarmac so it can be considered for future development.

Cllr Judith Wheeler told the meeting Tarmac is was “not the most environmentally friendly” and asked why it couldn’t be a “grass landscape.”
Officers said the developers said it was being used to create a “cleaner and safe” site as softer landscaping can be “susceptible to misuse.” It is lower maintenance and more cost effective.
The plan was supported by Cllr Denis Matthews and seconded by Cllr Robin Frith. Cllr Graham Gowland abstained.
