A new ‘School Streets’ traffic management project is reducing congestion and improving safety at a local primary school.
The scheme has recently been introduced at St Philip Westbrook CE Primary School, WA5 – and it’s already having a positive impact.
It sees a temporary prohibition to all motorised vehicles being introduced to a section of road or roads outside a school during the schools’ opening and closing times.
As well as improving safety, the scheme supports the school’s efforts to encourage walking and cycling for school journeys, which in turn will help the environment by reducing congestion and pollution.
Cllr Hans Mundry, Leader of the council said: “Many schools across the town typically experience a number of traffic related issues at the beginning and end of the school day. This can cause risks to our young people, as well as parents and carers. School Streets schemes can make a big difference, helping create more space around schools and improving safety.
“I’m really pleased that St Philips have introduced this scheme, and I’m sure it will bring big benefits. By creating a vehicle free zone, everyone at the school will experience a safer environment, along with cleaner air. At the same time, I hope it will support the work to encourage many more young people to choose active travel for their journeys to and from school.”
Under the new scheme, no motorised vehicles are able to enter the restricted road, during term-time, between the times of operation, which are Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 8.55am; and 2.55pm – 3.30pm. During these times, the street becomes a pedestrian and cycling zone only.
The restricted zones are:
- Westbrook Centre (east-west section) – From its junction with Westbrook Crescent for an approximate distance of 120 metres in an easterly direction.
- Westbrook Centre (east-west section) – From a point approximately 120 metres north east of its junction with Westbrook Crescent to its junction with Westbrook Centre (north/south section).
The scheme is enforced using temporary barriers, and new gateway signs indicate the restricted area. No properties are affected by the restrictions.
