Fairtrade activists celebrate 30th anniversary

FAIRTRADE activists in Warrington were celebrating 30 years of Fairtrade this week with a special promotion in Holy Trinity Church in the town centre.

Trish Powell from the Warrington steering group which was formed about 20 years ago and has a Fair 4 All stall on Warrington Market, was joined by Stuart Mackay from the Coop- which has supported Fairtrade since its inception.

The Coop was one of the first to introduce Fairtrade bananas with nearly all products now coming under the banner to ensure people get a fair wage.

Warrington became a Fairtrade town in 2006 and does a lot of work with churches and community organisations.

In addition to receiving a fair price for their produce, farmers are advised on ways to protect their crops from the effects of climate change.

In 2019 Warrington was voted the UK’s top spot for Fairtrade activism after a petition, delivered to No. 10 Downing Street, calling to make living incomes a ‘priority’ for UK-funded aid projects was signed by 50,000 people – including almost 1,000 in Warrington.
