Residents to be consulted on council’s gambling policy

RESIDENTS, business leaders, partner agencies and others are being consulted on Warrington Borough Council’s gambling policy.

Every three years, the council is required to produce a gambling policy, known as a ‘Statement of Principles’, by the Gambling Act 2005.

The policy sets out the council’s approach towards licensing businesses premises used for gambling. These can include amusement arcades, betting shops, bingo halls, and casinos. It also applies to clubs and pubs that provide gambling machines.

The licensing objectives under the Gambling Act 2005 are:
1. To prevent gambling from being:
a. a source of crime and disorder
b. associated with crime and disorder
c. used to support crime
2. To ensure gambling is conducted in a fair and open way
3. To protect children and other vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling

Cllr John Kerr-Brown (pictured), the council’s cabinet member for housing services and licensing, said: “We’re committed to ensuring that gambling in Warrington is conducted responsibly and safely. That’s why we’re inviting everyone in our community to have their say on our new draft gambling policy.

“Whether you’re a resident, business, or simply have an interest in this important issue, your opinion matters. We want to hear from as many people as possible to ensure that our policy reflects the needs and concerns of our town.
“Your feedback will help us ensure we continue to work effectively with the Gambling Commission and the trade to promote responsible gambling, protect vulnerable individuals, and maintain high standards within the licensed premises sector.”
