PUPILS from Great Sankey High School, Warrington paid a visit to the Amazon fulfilment centre in the town as part of the site’s week-long celebration of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)

INWED is a global awareness campaign that celebrates women in engineering. This year’s theme was Enhanced by Engineering, celebrating the women who have made people’s everyday lives better through their work.
Twelve girls from the school received the tour and also got hands-on to fix some commonly observed issues faced by Amazon technicians.
Christian Stewart, site leader at Amazon in Warrington, said: “We loved welcoming the pupils from Great Sankey High School to our site to learn a bit more about what it means to be an engineer at Amazon from some of exceptional women working in our engineering department. We hope they had a great day and that what they’ve learned would encourage them to consider pursuing a career in this field, perhaps through our RME apprenticeship programme.”
One of the pupils said: “I had a great day at Amazon hearing from women who work as engineers at the site. It was cool to see how the job actually works day-to-day and it got me excited to maybe pursue a career in engineering some day.”
Julie Attwood, from Great Sankey High School, added: “Many thanks to Amazon for having us on site to celebrate INWED this year. The girls had a great time and found the experience empowering and insightful. It’s great to see women at Amazon being fully supported in the workplace as engineers.”
Amazon supports the communities where it operates and has delivered free computer science and STEM education programmes to more than 700,000 students across the UK through Amazon Future Engineer.
