A manager of a Warrington chip shop who was convicted of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a vulnerable young woman has been jailed.

Cuneyt Ulas, who fled to Turkey during his trial, was told by a judge that he had no doubt that his “predatory behaviour” would constitute a risk.

Ulas aged 36, had been convicted of nine offences of sexual assault and one of attempted rape by a jury after a trial and was jailed for 12 years.

After he returned to this country he admitted breach of bail. His barrister told Liverpool Crown Court that Ulas had told him that prison, “was not for him.”

Robert Wyn Jones, prosecuting, said that the victim told her parents that Ulas, who was manager of The Captain’s Table in Marsh House Lane, had touched her.
She did not want to make a fuss or lodge a complaint but his offending behaviour escalated in seriousness and she told a relative what had been happening and Cheshire police were informed.

When interviewed after his arrest he declined to answer questions. Swabs were taken from him, and when forensically examined it was found that they contained DNA from the victim.
When re-interviewed he again gave ‘no comment’ replies to questions.

In an impact statement the victim told that she had been “scared and anxious during the investigation and of whether he would try and find me.
“I was worried if he saw me again what he would do to me, and if he would do it again. I do not know what he is capable of.
“I cannot sleep at night or relax, and I am worried that he will turn up at my address. I have been scared every day since the investigation started.

“I have lost my confidence and independence and try and think happy, but in fact I am very scared,” she stated.

Rishy Panesar, defending, said that Ulas has no previous convictions and intends to appeal his conviction.
He said imprisonment would be “a salutary experience” and as he is the breadwinner, his wife and children will suffer.

Judge Neil Flewitt, KC said, “Tragedies of this sort of offending are that as well as direct victims of your offending, there are indirect victims too. You have an innocent wife and children who will suffer from your incarceration, but that is your fault.”
He ordered Ulas, of Pensarn Road, Old Swan, Liverpool, to sign on the Sex Offender Register for life and imposed a 15 year restraining order.
