VIDEO & PICTURES: SHOWERS failed to dampen spirits at what is believed to be the 188th Warrington Walking Day.
Grey skies greeted walkers as they arrived at Warrington Town Hall and showers were the order of the day as walkers set off for the annual Walk of Witness.
But many came prepared with their brollies providing a stark contrast to the sunshine and heat earlier in the week.
The town’s first citizen, Mayor Cllr. Steve Wright, himself a regular walker spanning six decades, took the salute as churches, schools, pipe and drum bands and local community groups paraded through the Golden Gates.
Only World Wars and Covid have previously stopped the annual Warrington Walking Day from going ahead so the weather forecast of scattered shows and cloudy skies did little to deter the enthusiastic walkers.
Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness, continues.
Warrington Worldwide provided a live stream of the Walk from in front of the Golden Gates.
